My Passions & Athletic History:
Regularly doing yoga, biking and hiking mountains helps me stay fit for my true passions:
wakesurfing and snowboarding.
On winter weekends, I am an avid backcountry snowboarder,
whether it's cat skiing, split boarding, heli-skiing, or sled-skiing.
In the summer, you can find me on the lake, wakesurfing with my family & friends.
My love for wakesurfing led me to achieve a big dream i had...
winning 1st place at the 2019 World Wakesurf Championships!
Fun fact, in the CWSA (Competitive Wakesurf Association),
I am currently ranked 1st in the World, in the Masters Skim Wakesurf division
(that's 35 yrs. and older), and I am a
team rider for a local Canadian company @kanukboardco
and I am also sponsored by Agenda Surf traction pads.
In fact for several years, I have coached many people to wakeboard & wakesurf in the Okanagan,
as a NCCP certified Instructor.
Prior to wakesurfing, for many years of my mid adult life,
I competed in Wakeboarding across BC and Nationally.
I won the BC Provincial Championships a few times,
and had my best National achievement in 2011 when
I won 3rd place at the Canadian Wakeboard Nationals, in the Women's Open division.
But I think that my achievements on the water and confidence in deep snow can be correlated
to my young athletic years of playing BASKETBALL.
From high school I was recruited to play on the Simon Fraser University Basketball team with a four year scholarship.
I also played for the Under 17 and Under 19 BC Provincial Elite Basketball teams for a few years.
So basically for a period of 8 years, I ate, slept and breathed in basketball.
The lessons I learned on the court have imprinted into my life in many ways.
I have stayed connected with basketball by coaching Grade 6 girls basketball teams for over 18 years.
And now I find myself identifying and naturally applying many
elements of success that I learned from playing on a team,
to my own individual sports I do now, and in turn,
delivering a similar growth mindset to students in my 'gym classes':
4 Key Elements to Ms. Newell's Athletic Success:
*Practice, practice, practice...PERSEVERE!
YOU CAN learn from your mistakes.
Give yourself POSITIVE SELF TALK,
or 2 tips to do it better.
When you finally succeed,
you will feel Proud, and you will
BELIEVE in YOURSELF &
gain self-confidence.
*Visualize!
If you can't see yourself doing it,
you won't be able to do it...
so need to try and
VISUALIZE!
Practice closing your eyes and see yourself doing the skill
from Zoomed In, and from ZOOMED OUT.
Start in practice mode and shift to game mode.
Trick your brain into believing you are really practicing,
and you will start to do it more naturally, with more confidence!
* 'Sweat is the Price of Success'
This was the quote on my SFU Basketball poster.
It connects with practice, practice, practice, but also,
it doesn't matter what sport you are doing,
you need a strong CORE. Your CORE includes your Abs and back muscles.
There are many ways to engage your CORE. Cross-training is awesome!
Try your best to do a variety of sports and activities that get your heart rate up,
strengthen your muscles, improve your flexibility, agility and hand-eye coordination.
The more your don't have to focus on fitness,
the more energy you have to focus on the actual skill or game you want to play.
* Breath is Life!
At the root of all of these elements of success is your Breath.
Learning to harness the power of your breath is key
to opening the door to a deep Visualization, maintaining a calm appearance in an interview,
or making that last Swish before the buzzer in a basketball game.
Taking time to sit or do stretches that focus on deep breathing is easy to do,
it's free, it's healthy and it's a super effective tool of success and Life!
Take time to be still and Breathe Deep!
Here are a few photos of me doing what i love... I will try to dig up some old school basketball photos too!
